Sen. Dave Marsden wants to see revenue from a casino go to education and Metro.

A Virginia Senate committee Wednesday will vote on a bill that would let Fairfax County put a casino referendum for Tysons on an upcoming ballot.
The matter comes before the Virginia Senate Committee on General Laws and Technology.
Sen. Dave Marsden’s bill would bring a casino, hotel, and conference center to the west side of Route 7, within a quarter mile of the Spring Hill Metro station, where a former Aston Martin and Bentley dealership had been.
The Burke Democrat presented a substitute bill that would remove language about prevailing wages and labor, Patch reported.
Marsden wants to see casino money used for Metro, which has no dedicated funding, and for education. The money could also offset lost tax revenue from the commercial real estate sector, he said during a subcommittee hearing Tuesday.
During the subcommittee hearing, no one spoke against the measure, but community groups have voiced opposition to the idea, including the Reston Citizens Association, which called on elected leaders to oppose the bill. Reston had been a possible casino location, but Marsden removed it from consideration in his legislation.
