The Tulalip Tribes broke ground Tuesday on its Tulalip Resort Casino expansion and renovation.
The 70,250-square-foot addition will increase the size of the casino, located at 10200 Quil Ceda Blvd. in Tulalip, by nearly 37% to over 262,000 square feet.
Work is starting a bit later than originally planned. In November, the tribes said they expected to begin construction by the end of 2023.
Despite the slight delay, the project is still expected to be complete by the end of 2025 as initially planned, said Dan Miller, a spokesperson for the tribes.
Swinerton Construction of San Francisco is the general contractor and Bremerton-based Rice Fergus Miller is the architect.
Swinerton has been the general contractor for several tribal casino projects in the region, including the Muckleshoot Casino Resort hotel, sections of Emerald Queen Casino (Puyallup Tribe of Indians) and Angel of the Winds (Stillaguamish Tribe), among others.
Rice Fergus Miller’s portfolio also includes several tribal projects, such as the DraftKings Sportsbook at Tulalip Resort Casino, the Tulalip Tribes’ Quil Ceda Creek counseling office and the Chehalis Tribe’s Lucky Eagle Casino & Hotel casino expansion.
The two-decade-old Tulalip Resort Casino property is a regional tourist draw. In addition to the casino, the property has a 12-story hotel with 370 guest rooms as well as amenities such as 30,000 square feet of meeting, convention and wedding space, a full-service spa, several restaurants and a 3,000-seat amphitheater.
The completed project will “highlight the Tulalip Tribes’ culture and traditions and weave them into innovative design concepts representing the dynamics of the Salish Sea, shorelines and forest environments,” according to a news release.
“In keeping with our connection to our waters as the People of the Salmon, we will continue to tell our story through the new architectural features and visuals, a rich palate of colors and the use of natural materials,” Marci Fryberg, president and chief operating officer of Tulalip Gaming Organization, said in the release.
The estimated project cost has not been disclosed.
The casino, which initially cost $78 million to construct, opened in 2003. The hotel was added a few years later.
In 2016, the casino underwent a $15 million renovation, according to The Herald of Everett. In 2017, the tribes started construction on the $100 million Quil Ceda Creek Casino, located less than 3 miles away, which opened in 2021.
Tulalip Resort Casino’s north entrance closed on Jan. 15 for the first phase of construction. The game floor will remain open during that time.
