The Seminole Tribe of Florida celebrated the milestone of the incoming Seminole Brighton Bay Hotel & Casino with a Topping Off Ceremony last Wednesday in the venue located in Okeechobee area.
Many tribe members attended the celebration alongside Seminole Gaming, Suffolk Construction and Wilmen Construction who are managing the project.
Throughout the venue were the colors of the Seminole Tribe: red, white, black and yellow. Many of the Tribal Council who attended donned the colors of the tribe and emphasized the symbolic gesture of the ceremony for the Seminoles’ future.
“The Little Red Barn, like that little engine that could, is the highest gross property that we have in the Seminole Tribe in the portfolio,” Seminole Tribe of Florida Chairman Marcellus W. Osceola Jr. said. “It outdoes everything and to Marty and your family, keep your legacy going. Hats off to you guys.”
Marty Johns, general manager, is of the Johns family who started the original Seminole Casino Brighton, or the “Little Red Barn,” in 1980. He was the last speaker before the ceremony and walked down the aisles past the tables of first responders, contributors and tribal elders onto the stage.
Johns invited his family onto the stage, his “world,” and couldn’t thank everyone in the room enough for the time and effort they put into the project. Shortly after, everyone was directed outside for the top off with the option of staying inside from the heat.
Outside was the final steel beam of the structure ready to be hoisted to the very top as a symbolic victory for the project’s halfway completion. As it was lifted, the United States, Seminole Tribe of Florida and Florida State flags waved in the steady wind.
Current team members at the Seminole Casino Brighton and construction teams had the chance to sign the beam to represent their efforts on the project. On top of the beam was a ceremonial tree traditionally placed on top of a new structure.
“What makes it a little different is that it’s been a long time coming. We’re in a rural area, in the middle of nowhere so to speak,” Johns said after the ceremony. “Up until three or four years ago, we’re just now on the GPS.”
From a marketing standpoint, Johns noticed that he’s seen people coming to the interior of Florida. They’re looking for something to do and “get off the concrete,” bringing more attention to the reservation.
“It’s gonna sell certainly, great revenue, and that goes back to the tribe, and it will distribute it whether it be health care and other things,” Johns said.
The new casino is going to replace the original when it’s finished in late January 2025. Construction broke ground in January 2023 and has made quick progress on the structure with the next phase focusing on the interior.
According to Pete Tuffo, president of Florida Gulf Coast and National Gaming at Suffolk Construction, the casino’s quick building was possible from the work of 190 construction workers. They have been working 10-hour shifts, six days a week.
“The next step from here is we’re really starting to narrow down,” Tuffo said. “Over the next three months, you’ll see it start to look more like its final shape. You’ll see more colors, more of the finishes show up.”
It is also the first of many for the Brighton Reservation with features that significantly expand upon the original facilities sitting on 70 acres. The structure is 188,130 square feet overall. It will include the first hotel on the reservation with 100 guest rooms on four floors.
A first for any Seminole Casino is a 10-lane bowling alley, Brighton Bay Bowling. The casino itself consists of 640 slot machines and 18 live tables – with a smoke-free area with 104 slot machines and four live tables included in the total.
