MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — With almost 900 wagers available, Potawatomi Casino Hotel is ready for its first Super Bowl since opening its sportsbook.
The sportsbook has grown from 20 kiosks to 73, and Sportsbook Director Sean Cullen said they have seen a lot of demand in the almost year it has been open.
“Days that you would think would be slow or when we had snow storms and the temperatures are in the minus, people are still coming out, the kiosks are busy non-stop,” he said.
Cullen and the team at the casino have been looking forward to the biggest betting day of the year: The Super Bowl.
“It’s basically a celebration of our first year being in operation and getting through our first football season as a sportsbook,” he said. “There are a lot of unique wagers that you wouldn’t normally see in a regular season game. You can bet everything from the coin toss to an offensive line to score a touchdown to the time the game is going to end.”
Guests can stack their bets online before placing them at the casino, use the kiosks to place their bets or work with a ticket writer.
“They can place wagers on the Super Bowl right until the game starts, and there are certain wagers that are available life as the game plays,” Cullen said.
While it is fun for casual and die-hard fans alike, it is also a sensitive time for those struggling with gambling disorders.
“It’s particularly difficult, challenging for people for the person with gambling disorder because by now, they’ve been betting the whole season, they’ve been betting and more likely losing than anything else and in thinking it’s going to fix everything,” Gambling Counselor Doug LaBelle said.
“It’s not a logical, rational way of thinking, but it is the thinking of someone with gambling disorder.”
LaBelle encourages people struggling to reach out to local resources.
“Pick up the phone and call the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling, ask for help. Google gamblers anonymous, ask for help,” he said.
You can reach the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-426-2535, Text at 1-850-888-4673, or Live Chat through their website.
