MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio (WKEF) — The Ohio Casino Control Commission's Executive Director, Matthew T. Schuler announced that Ohioans will no longer be able to place prop bets on NCAA players' individual performances or statistics on Friday, Feb. 23.
On Jan. 31, the NCAA sent a letter to the OCCC requesting that the commission prohibit these types of wagers.
The NCAA outlined six main reasons why individual prop bets on college athletes should no longer be allowed in Ohio.
The first concern was about an increase in harassment that student-athletes were experiencing from bettors. The NCAA provided evidence that came from a survey of NCAA schools that was conducted from July 18, 2023, to Aug. 1, 2023, according to the commission's press release. The NCAA also provided reports from the University of Dayton and Ohio State University to make its case.
"Our student-athletes had been on the side of receiving just wildly inappropriate messages and some online harassment related to their performances," Neil Sullivan, the University of Dayton athletic director said.
Here are the six reasons that the NCAA requested that these wagers be eliminated:
According to the press release, these types of bets were not going to be allowed anymore starting on Feb. 23.
The commission considered multiple factors before coming to a decision.
"They did ask for input. They asked for data from us, and we supplied what we could and they made a decision based on data and input from the NCAA," Dave Schleter, the Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway sportsbook manager said.
The NCAA sent this statement in response to the OCCC's decision:
Sullivan said that they were happy to partner with the NCAA to help get this done.
"The NCAA really was driving this in states that had allowed prop betting, and they just asked us to be part of it and be advocates, and certainly, we were glad to do that," said Sullivan. "So, I give the NCAA a lot of credit for pushing it in states that they thought they needed to and we just joined on."
Eight of Ohio's sports gaming operators objected to a total ban on player-specific prop bets, stating that a ban would drive people to place these bets illegally. Operators also expressed that they have the ability to investigate gamblers who bully or harass college athletes, and they can take lawful action against these people.
Schuler responded in his decision press release by stating that "the comments by the sports gaming operators do not persuade me to disprove the NCAA’s request."
Schleter said that he does not feel like this will hurt casinos that much.
"Those aren't as popular prop bets as the professional prop bets anyways and they never had nearly the amount of collegiate player props," said Schleter. "I don't think it's going to impact us all that much."
These were some of the comments that OCCC Executive Director Schuler made in the press release about the decision.
Casinos will have until March 1 to void these types of bets that have already been placed for future games and fully implement the restrictions.
