While operators, lobbyists, politicians, and seemingly every other New York City resident waits — and waits — for updates on where three downstate casino licenses will land, four companies in the running were in the news last week.
One made news for shining a light, another did for driving its potential customers, and the two others earned headlines for potentially driving themselves out of contention.
Starting with the latter: According to a New York Post article, an ongoing alleged bookmaking scandal out in Las Vegas could have serious implications for MGM’s and Resorts World’s hoped-for plans at Empire City Casino in Yonkers and Resorts World Casino in Queens, respectively.
Scott Sibella, who was the president and COO at the Resorts World in Las Vegas, left the company a week ago Friday.
“Resorts World Las Vegas today (Friday) announced that President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Sibella has left the company, effective immediately,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported via an emailed statement from Resorts World. “This action comes after the company was recently made aware that Mr. Sibella violated company policies and the terms of his employment.”
As to what those violated policies were? It’s unclear.
But it comes at a time when federal investigators continue to probe the case of Wayne Nix, a former minor league baseball pitcher who is accused of running an illegal bookmaking operation. One leg of the case involves allegations employees at the MGM Grand in Vegas — where Sibella was president in 2017 and 2018, according to the Post — were using company assets to cover their gambling debts to Nix’s ring.
And what does all this have to do with the battle to win New York’s coveted trio of downstate casino licences?
“This is a bigger problem for MGM because they were [allegedly] involved in the conduct,” a source, who has worked with the New York State Gaming Commission in an advisory role, told the Post. “But Resorts World would need to get rid of the stain. Ethics is going to be a huge deal in deciding who gets the licenses. The ethics and the relationships with the communities where they are putting their casinos is where this is going to be fought and won. You’d have to think this investigation into Sibella reflects badly on MGM.”
Meanwhile, a much less controversial story is playing out in the Bronx, where Bally’s is hoping to build a casino on part of publicly-owned land at Ferry Point that houses a formerly Trump-branded golf course.
Earlier this month, Bally’s took over day-to-day operations of the course, and last week — in an effort to be a good neighbor — launched a free, 10-stop bus route for a part of the East Bronx that offers little in the way of public transportation.
The bus, bright red and decked out with Bally’s signage, is set to run for at least three months, according to a New York Daily News report. The Bronx Times originally broke the bus story, and called it an “olive branch from the entertainment company to locals.”
Lastly, the Soloviev Group, which is seeking to build a casino (along with Mohegan Gaming) near the United Nations, recently unveiled plans for a 17,000-light art installation on the site on First Avenue between 38th and 41st Streets, according to The New York Times.
The installation, which is debuting this winter and designed by artist Bruce Munro and called “Field of Light,” will be free and open to the public.
“It’s a gift to New York,” said Michael Hershman, the chief executive of Soloviev Group.
Resorts World, MGM, Bally’s, and the Soloviev Group are but four of 11 known entities seeking to build casinos in and around New York City. There is currently no timeline as to when the New York State Gaming Commission will start making any decisions, though official bids are expected to be due sometime before the end of the calendar year.
