The Water, a multi-pool outdoor area with room for more than 750 people next to Black Oak Casino Resort, opened Thursday for guests of the resort’s hotel.
New features of The Water include a pool area and spa with a full-service bar and lounge, a giant outdoor video screen, room for dances and pool parties, a snack bar, and a kids water area with a water structure consisting of slides and water features. Children ages 5 and under will require direct supervision.
The new pool area will be for paying guests of the resort’s hotel, but the public is invited to free lighted drone shows Thursday and Friday nights to celebrate the opening of the brand-new pools and the Fourth of July.
Viewing areas in Heritage Park, the sixth floor of the resort parking garage, and in D-lot next to the Tribal Fire Department will open at 6:30 p.m. each evening, according to resort staff. Food trucks, including Taco Fiesta and Kona Shaved Ice, will be outside and inside the casino, The Charlie, Black Oak Café, Jumping Coyote, and Seven Sisters will also be open.
Contractors Moorefield Construction of Sacramento broke ground on The Water project in December, followed by a ceremonial groundbreaking for leaders with the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Inc., and Black Oak Casino Resort, and the aim was always to open by July 4, said Darryl Tinkle, TEDA president and Brady Day, project manager.
“Moorefield Construction has gone above and beyond to ensure that we hit that deadline, under Brady’s supervision,” Tinkle said Wednesday at The Water. “We’ve had people out here working 12-hour days, seven days a week, in the rain at times, to get this done on time.”
Tinkle added that the plan to open by July 4 centered on the fact that the holiday is consistently one of the hottest dates each summer, not just this summer. The Mother Lode region is in the midst of a 10-day heat wave with triple-digit heat possible through next Thursday.
“We always know from record years, the last 10 years, the 4th of July has been one of the hottest times of the year,” Tinkle said. “That’s why we set that deadline.”
There are plans to share The Water with people who are not staying at the resort’s hotel in the near future, Tinkle said.
“We’re working on being able to offer it once or twice a week for day use for the public, people who pay admission for use of the pools,” Tinkle said.
Opening of The Water pools area has been approved by the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health and by the county, Tinkle and Day said.
A live band is scheduled to play outside at The Water at 7 p.m. Thursday, Tinkle said. The resort will also air the Nate Diaz-Jorge Masvidal fight on the giant 12-by-7-foot screen at The Water and inside in The Charlie.
The 158-inch outdoor video screen has a custom surround-sound system that can be heard everywhere on the 20,000 square foot pool deck and at the same time is not heard anywhere inside the resort’s hotel, Tinkle said.
There are showers and restrooms for pool guests outside and inside the resort’s hotel. There is a handicap accessible chairlift for pool access. There are also plans to have semi-private cabanas on both pool decks. Tinkle and Day praised Moorefield Construction and The Waters’ designer, Las Vegas-based entertainment architects Steelman Partners.
“I think it’s a great amenity the TEDA board and Darryl have added to the resort,” Day said of The Water on Wednesday. “Their vision is making this a beautiful destination resort.”
The Water is the latest expansion at Black Oak Casino Resort, which has recently added Elevate, the new 20,000-square-foot family fun center that opened next to the resort in December. Elevate is now open 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Friday each week and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday.
“Our whole goal for this community is to make it a better place to be,” Tinkle said. “By continuing to provide for families, we believe we’re strengthening the community as well as this location.”
Tinkle said the next phase of expansion at the resort includes the ongoing construction of a new, 48-suite tower with a new hotel lobby, close to slot machines in the casino. Completion is expected by June next year. The resort is also planning to remodel 148 existing hotel rooms to be exactly the same as those in the new hotel tower.
The resort is owned and operated by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians.
