Construction on the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise’s $450 million casino complex is well underway in the West Valley and is on track to be completed this year.
In its first phase, the Desert Diamond Casino White Tanks at San Lucy will feature 900 class III slot machines and 48 table games including 16 poker tables all centered around a large circular bar. It was also feature a sportsbook and bar, a poker room, and high-limit table games room and slots room with VIP lounges.
Other amenities include a merchandise retail store and food hall with a bar and eateries such as Deli-ish sandwiches, Taqueria-ville, Spitfire chicken and Chucks burgers.
The nearly 200,000-square-foot facility will also feature a casual restaurant called Pub Stop and an upscale Morton’s The Steakhouse. Both will have entertainment stages and indoor and outdoor dining.
The new casino will be the fifth Desert Diamond Casinos location in Arizona and the second in metro Phoenix. It’s located at 8200 N. Sarvival Ave. along the Loop 303 and Northern Parkway.
The development team said their approach to the casinos is to offer an amenity for everyone whether it’s gaming, dining, drinking or entertainment.
The new Desert Diamond Casino in the Glendale area is expected to deliver by the end of 2024. Project leaders attribute partnerships, experience and securing materials ahead of time as reasons why they’ve been able to stay on track for completing construction this year.
The new White Tanks casino will have a similar quality, fit and finish to the tribe’s other Glendale casino and be managed by the same team, said Treena Parvella, government and public relations director for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise. Its existing Desert Diamond Casino in Glendale was the largest in Arizona in 2023 with 1,450 Class III slot machines.
“We want that continuity in terms of what we provide our guests here in the West Valley,” Parvello said.
The White Tanks casino is being built by a joint venture between Hunt Construction and Penta Building Group. JCJ Architecture is the master planner, architect and interior designer for the casino. The same teams also developed the Desert Diamond Casino West Valley.
The 80-acre project is set to be delivered by the end of 2024, which means the casino will have been completed within 19 months, according to project representatives on April 23. The project team also built a 2,500-space parking garage in 50 days.
The new Desert Diamond Casino White Tanks complex will feature a host of amenities in addition to a massive game room as shown in these renderings.
Mike Bean, CEO of Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said their partnerships with the county and cities of Surprise and Glendale and the experience of their construction team helped them meet the ambitious construction timeline.
“We believe we’ll have a pretty strong presence as an entertainment facility,” Bean said.
Timing for the second phase has yet to be determined, but this would include the addition of a 350-room hotel, a pool and spa, 65,000 square feet of convention space and a 2,500-seat entertainment venue. A third phase would follow with more retail, entertainment and amenities for a small entertainment district.
The White Tanks project is expected to create about 5,500 construction jobs and 1,020 permanent jobs. Hiring is expected to start ramping up in September and October. Parvella said they expect to host several hiring fairs at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale.
Before moving forward with a second phase, Bean said they plan to develop the second phase of its other West Valley casino along the Loop 101 with a 450-room, 19-story hotel and 35,000 square feet of convention and meeting space in the city’s sports and entertainment district.
