Here we go again, Alabama.
Another legislative session and another state-wide gambling proposal.
Thursday, a bill to bring a lottery, casinos and sports betting to the state received overwhelming approval in the house.
Mountain Brook’s David Faulkner is one of 32 Representatives who voted against it.
He feels while most Alabamians support voting on a lottery, this plan includes the entire gambling kitchen sink.
“You either vote it, or you get it all, or you don’t get anything. And so that’s where I had a problem,” Faulkner said.
The legislation now heads to the Senate.
Greg Albritton, who sponsored his own gambling bill in 2022, was not convinced Thursday’s passage was a sure thing.
“That it was a razor-thin margin that it wouldn’t get done, that there was no hope, for it that was D.O.A.,” Albritton said.
Gov. Kay Ivey has voiced her support for the new gambling plan, just like she did for Albritton’s bill two years ago.
Faulkner claims this plan does do more to crack down on rogue gambling operators than the 2022 version.
“No regulation, no criminal penalties, no regulation of the gaming. I thought that was a disaster,” Faulkner said.
While Thursday’s approval came only days after the bill was introduced in the house, Albritton expects the Senate to be more thorough.

“Try to dispel the misinformation that’s out there. So that’s going to take some time. I think it may, you know, couple, three weeks we’ll have this pretty well done,” Albritton said.
If it does pass, the bill still requires the governor’s signature and voters’ approval in November.
