Local residents and visitors eagerly lined up around the block in anticipation of being among the first to experience Danville’s newest attraction, the Danville Casino.
Chris Albrecht, senior vice president and general manager of Caesars Virginia, expressed his excitement to open the doors.
“I am so fired up to get these doors open,” said Albrecht.
The temporary Danville Casino, and in another year, the permanent Caesars Virginia, now under construction, are located on the former site of Dan River Mills.
One resident in line was Patricia Dudley, who worked at the Dan River Finishing Mills in the 70s. “I worked here in 1973. I used to walk here back in the day, it’s weird how you walk to it today, and it’s a casino,” said Dudley.
She has lived in Danville and Pittsylvania County all her life, and she hopes that the addition of the casino will make Danville a premier travel spot in Virginia.
“I hope this puts us on a map,” Dudley said.
On Monday, and despite the drizzle, Caesar’s staff, city leaders and government officials were excited to be the first to provide residents and visitors a tour of the 40,000-square-foot gaming space inside a semi-permanent tent at 1100 W. Main St.
“I love it when a plan comes together,” said Del. Danny Marshall.
“Monday, May the 15th of 2023 is going to be one of those dates that will be remembered as a turning point in history in Danville,” he said.
With an investment of $650 million, Caesars is expected to bring 1,350 jobs and an estimated 1.5 million visitors, according to Marshall.
Danville Casino has 740 slot machines, 25 live tables with games like blackjack and roulette, and 28 electronic table games.
“It’s a great day for Eastern Band, a great day for Danville. We hope to be here to help build this city, but we stayed downtown last night, and you know, it’s an old town, and it’s beautiful,” said Richard French, Chairman of the Eastern Band of Cherokees. The Eastern Band of Cherokees is a partner with Caesars Entertainment and Caesars Virginia.
This is only a taste of what is to come as the permanent facility will offer more than 1,300 slot machines, 24 electronic table games, 85 live table games, a World Series of Poker room, and a Caesars Sportsbook. In addition, it will feature a 500-room hotel, a pool, bars and restaurants, a 2,500-seat live entertainment theater, and 40,000 square feet of meeting and convention space.
The permanent location is expected to open in late 2024.
Birgit Hall from Reidsville, North Carolina, was waiting in line with her sister from Germany. Hall is happy that a casino is close to home.
“I’m excited because I used to take her to Harrah’s Cherokee all the time, but it’s a long drive,” said Hall.
Hall added that she wishes North Carolina would legalize gambling.
The Virginia General Assembly in 2020 passed legislation which would allow casino gambling in five cities determined to be economically challenged — Danville, Bristol, Portsmouth, Norfolk and Richmond — as a form of economic revitalization. The enabling legislation allowed each city put the decision, through a referendum, of whether or not to allow for a casino. Richmond was the only city to reject the idea.
In Danville, it was the closing of Dan River Mills in 2006, as well as the collapse of the tobacco industry, that led to economic hardship in the city. The arrival of Caesars has been much anticipated since the referendum passed in 2020.
“It’s the citizens of the town that make the town. It’s not the buildings, it’s the people. And we want to thank you all for taking the chance and allowing us to help you grow and have this casino here,” said French.
