SAULT STE. MARIE — Kewadin Casinos is beginning a multi-million dollar expansion project this month.
Earlier in December, the Kewadin Casinos Sault Ste. Marie location began phase one of the exterior renovations as part of a large expansion project.
Kewadin Casinos, which is owned and operated by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is one of the largest casino chains in the region with five locations across the state. Its main and original location is based in Sault Ste. Marie and will be the first to undergo major upgrades.
The expansion is supported by the Sault Tribe, as the casino has always been a major economic driver in the community and frequently hosts tribal events and ceremonies.

Phase one includes work on the exterior of the building, adding new material and new windows across the entire building. Officials said the planned result is a sleek white building with a modern design.
The interior portion of the expansion is set to begin in mid-January 2024. It will completely renovate the interior of the 268-room hotel tower. Interior renovations include upgrades to individual rooms and adding more rooms.
The renovation is taking part in phases running concurrently so as not to impact guests. All casino functions will remain open during the renovation. Exterior renovations are expected to end this winter and interior work will be completed by winter 2025, just in time to celebrate the casino’s 40-year anniversary.
“We celebrated our 38-year anniversary this year and our 40th anniversary will be celebrated in a completely modernized hotel — both inside and out. We’re excited to see the new changes within our hotel and to watch our guests experience us for the first time all over again,” said Kewadin Sault General Manager Dana Schlehuber.
Kewadin Casinos has hired Integrated Designs Inc. for architecture and engineering services and Gundlach Champion to provide construction management services for this project.
After completion, Kewadin officials said they hope to continue with more renovations at both the Sault location and others, but no other projects have been announced at this time.
