During a tour of the facility, casino leaders shared construction updates for the 180,000 sq. ft. building.
ROCKFORD, Ill. — Hard Rock Casino Rockford says it’s a safe bet for the building to complete construction by its August 2024 estimation.
The 180,000 sq. ft. facility remains under assembly as crews fill the space with 900 trucks-worth of concrete and 922 tons of structural steel.
Additionally, a warmer winter than usual played a hand in the Hard Rock’s fortune thus far.
“I think we maybe had one or two days where we were impacted on weather,” says Geno Iafrate – president of Hard Rock Casino Rockford. “But we were pouring concrete outside in the middle of December in Northern Illinois. When has that ever happened?”
The incoming facility hosted a “Hard Hat” tour on Tuesday – providing construction updates and expectations of what the finished product will look like. Moreover, Iafrate led the exhibition while workers erected walls, laid flooring and wove electrical wires through the building.
While Hard Rock awaits an expected Labor Day weekend opening, staff share excitement with progress since the breaking ground in 2022.
It’s kind of like, you know, just growing a plant or a flower,” says Wendy Alsteen – vice-president of finance at Hard Rock Casino Rockford. “You got to start with the seeds and that gets bigger and bigger, and it’s starting to bloom.”
Later this year, over a thousand slot machines, dozens of table games, a sports book and several entertainment and culinary venues will replace the current construction zone.
Construction at the incoming casino appears ahead of the expected August 2024 completion due to unusual temperatures.
The project’s featured nearly 1,200 construction workers; Hard Rock states it’ll hire over 400 full- and part-time employees for the permanent casino.
Amidst the tour, Alsteen and Iafrate highlighted “revolutionary” technology present in Rockford’s Hard Rock. Below a visitors feet, wires and computing run underneath a “raised floor concept.”
“And this innovative flooring is just a lifesaver for our gaming operators,” says Iafrate. “I mean, sky’s the limit – you can reconfigure it to infinity.”
Alsteen added her anticipation with the flooring as well: “Instead of drilling through concrete, it’s raised. And so we have the ability to be more flexible with things.”
With the raised floor, operators may move particular machines nearly hassle-free – with permission from regulators.
Besides technology and gaming, the facility builds on displaying Hard Rock’s largest-in-the-world music memorabilia collection. Although Iafrate says he doesn’t know what collectibles will arrive in Rockford – “It’s like a closely guarded NASA secret in Florida” –, the area’s history sheds light on who to expect.
“I’m in the gambling business, so you’d probably bet you’re gonna see a good bit of Cheap Trick and Rick Nielsen stuff in there,” says Iafrate.
No matter if you’re walking inside the casino or driving off the highway, the facility’s nearly 100 ft. tall Rick Neilsen guitar will also be on display.
“It is absolutely as tall as it could be within about an inch of of the building code in Rockford,” says the Hard Rock Rockford president. “We even tilted it so we can make it a little bit bigger and not go over the height restrictions for the city.”
Hard Rock’s opening week features days of concerts; according to Iafrate, a Rick Neilsen sighting would be a “decent bet.”
Following the casino’s opening, staff aim to construct a hotel neighboring the facility.
