A former Gun Lake Casino employee was sentenced to four months in prison, two years of supervised release and ordered to pay more than $84,000 in restitution for stealing from a tribal organization.
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten announced on Thursday that Hopkins resident Jordan Lewis Cook, 26, allegedly stole more than $100,000 between September 2021 and November 2022 from Gun Lake Casino.
The casino is owned and operated by the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, or Gun Lake Tribe, which is in the process of a major expansion at the facility.

Casino surveillance video footage showed Cook started stealing the cash shortly after he was hired, according to authorities. Federal prosecutors say Cook stole from cash-out kiosks when he was supposed to be clearing the jammed cash-out machines. Cook’s bank records also revealed a large increase in cash deposits around the same time the money was being stolen from the casino in Wayland, prosecutors said.
“The defendant’s alleged theft and fraud actions against the tribal community is disturbing,” Cheyvoryea Gibson, special agent in charge of the FBI in Michigan, said in a statement.
Cook was ordered to pay $84,564 in restitution on top of his prison sentence. The Gun Lake Tribal Police Department investigated the case along with the FBI.
“The Gun Lake Tribe is committed to the safety and well-being of all persons within its jurisdiction and welcomes and appreciates the strong commitment and partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan and local law enforcement,” Gun Lake Tribe Interim Director of Public Safety Seth Carter said in a statement. “The Gun Lake Tribe is committed to building a safe community and supports comprehensive law enforcement, prevention, intervention and support services.”
The Gun Lake Tribe opened Gun Lake Casino along U.S. 131 in February 2011 after years of legal challenges. A report released on the 10-year anniversary of the casino showed that the tribe had invested $415 million in the facility, which had generated $2.8 billion in economic benefits in its first decade. That investment included a $100 million expansion completed in September 2021 that added 228,000 square feet to the casino.
Gun Lake Casino is now undergoing a $300 million expansion, which includes a 15-story hotel and multi-purpose “aquadome” enclosed space with multiple pools, and is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
The tribe also recently secured a $56 million federal loan for water infrastructure upgrades that will support the casino expansion.
Outside of gaming operations, the water infrastructure loan also will help lay the groundwork for plans to repurpose hundreds of acres north of the casino along U.S.-131 into a massive development that could include retail, health care, housing and manufacturing.
