An undocumented immigrant from Mexico has been charged in a federal criminal complaint with stealing $700,000 in cash from a west Michigan casino last year, officials said.
Jesus Gaytan-Garcia, 43, was arrested last week and is accused of participating in a scheme to steal money from the Four Winds Casino in Hartford on July 30, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten said in a statement Wednesday.
The casino is owned and operated by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, officials said. Hartford is about 16.5 miles west of Paw Paw and about 17 miles east of Benton Harbor.
Authorities filed a federal criminal complaint against Gaytan last week and it was unsealed Wednesday, according to court records.
He has been charged with embezzlement and theft from a tribal organization. The penalty is up to five years in prison.
Investigators allege he was part of a scheme to steal money from the casino in which someone pretending to be the tribal chairman called it and said he needed money for an urgent payment.
An employee who was duped by the claim collected $700,000 in cash, left the casino, took it to a Gary, Indiana, gas station and gave it to two unknown individuals, authorities said.
After months of investigating, FBI agents and Pokagon Tribal Police developed Gaytan as a suspect and believed he was one of the people to whom the casino employee gave the cash, according to the complaint. It also said he is “without legal authorization to be in the United States.”
Last week Wednesday, agents and police searched his home in Chicago, the complaint said. In a safe in the home’s basement, they located a bundle of cash still wrapped in a paper band, stamped with the word “Hartford” and the date July 30, 2023, according to the filing.
“The amount of money involved in this theft is extraordinary,” Totten said. “Unfortunately, instances of telephone scams at casinos are on the rise across the country, impacting both tribal and commercial gaming operations. Thanks to the dedicated, joint investigation of Pokagon Tribal police and the FBI, we were able to identify and arrest one of the perpetrators of this scheme that targeted the Hartford Four Winds Casino.”
