BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The Belle of Baton Rouge Casino has requested permission to demolish the Maritime II Building which was once part of the catfish town in downtown Baton Rouge. It’s located where Government Street turns into River Road and the casino wants to demolish the building for additional parking. The Historic Preservation Commission denied the Belle’s request.
”There are parking lots and parking garages in the vicinity, that was part of our questioning, and we just didn’t get a good sense of why this was required,” said Rex Cabaniss, a member of the Historic Preservation Commission.
The building is currently used as offices for the Belle and needs extensive repairs. The casino declined to comment. A letter from a construction company, tasked by the Belle to investigate what it would take to renovate the building and bring it up to current safety codes, outlines major problems including foundation and roof issues.
The company estimates full repairs could take up to 10 million dollars.
Because of the extensive repairs needed to renovate, the Belle is still fighting for the right to demo the property. They appealed the decision made by the Historic Commission. Historic Commission member Rex Cabaniss thinks the casino should search for other parking options first.
”At that time, that had not happened, so again part of our denial we didn’t think proper steps had gone through to look for other alternate development,” added Cabaniss.
It’s now up to the East Baton Rouge Metro Council to decide the appeal. If it’s overturned, Cabaniss thinks it would be a great loss for Baton Rouge.
”One more loss, if you drive around downtown or walk around downtown, there are so many missing teeth so to speak. So many parking lots that once held beautiful, functional buildings,” explained Cabaniss. “It’s all we have, we can’t replicate buildings like this.”
As of now, the Metro Council voted to push the date for the final decision to July 24th.
