Detroit — After 32 days on strike, the Detroit Casino Council representing 3,700 workers has reached a tentative five-year deal with Detroit’s three casinos, the council said in a statement Friday.
The agreement includes immediate pay raises averaging 18%, no health care cost increases for employees, workload reductions and other job protections, the first-ever technology contract language, retirement increases and more, according to the council. 
“I’m excited. I’m happy to see all your hard work, going in there trying to fight for your team members, yourself as well,” said Milledge McCaster, an operating engineer at Hollywood Casino at Greektown who helped negotiate the deal, outside the gaming house. “To finally see all of it come to fruition is a beautiful thing.”
McCaster said the tentative contract’s provisions, such as maintaining status quo on health care, will improve the lives of the casino workers.
“This is really going to help people maybe go from renting an apartment to buying a house. From maybe catching a bike to buying that first car to get back and forth to work,” he said. “That’s huge, to make sure that you are fighting for all the team members at all three casinos to really affect and change their lives.”
About 3,700 workers at Detroit’s three casinos walked off the job Oct. 17 after negotiations failed to reach new contracts with MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino.
The agreement is subject to a vote by members, the casino council said, and the strike will continue until the deal is ratified. 
The casinos issued a joint press release Friday acknowledging they reached a deal with the council.
Matt Buckley, president and COO of Midwest Group, MGM Resorts International, said in a statement that the company is “pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with the DCC on a new contract that ends the strike while giving a historic pay increase to our DCC-represented employees.”
Bruce Dall, president of MotorCity Casino Hotel, said in a statement that MotorCity takes “pride in providing exceptional jobs and benefits that support and reward our dedicated workforce, and we look forward to ratification of the deal.”
John Drake, vice president and general manager at Hollywood Casino at Greektown, said in a statement the casino’s leaders appreciate “the productive and respectful negotiations with the DCC and are eager to welcome back our team members as soon as possible.”
The workers, including dealers, cleaning staff, food and beverage staff, valets and engineers, have been striking to protect their health care, for wage increases, improved job security and fair workloads.
The Detroit Casino Council includes the UAW, Unite Here Local 24, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324 and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.
The council said the strike led to the “largest wage increases ever negotiated in the history of the Detroit casino industry,” it protected health care with no increased costs to employees and improved the value of the workers’ retirement benefit after no increases in eight years.
More details on the new deal are not being disclosed “to ensure unionized casinos workers have the opportunity to see full details of their contract first and vote on whether to accept it,” the council said in a statement.
“I think it’s going to pass because, basically, we got what we asked for,” said Maxine Ward-Looney, a 23-year slot technician at Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
“We’ve had God on our side, we’ve had 60-degree weather,” she said. “What I take away from this strike is, as a team member, it has brought us closer. I’ve met so many amazing people that I would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.”
