DANVILLE — The city of Danville’s share of funds generated by the Golden Nugget Danville casino in August totaled $187,872.
That money is a welcome shot in the arm to the city’s police and fire department pension fund but ranks near the bottom of the 13 casinos in Illinois that operated for the entire month.
Rivers Casino’s share of tax money sent to its home city of Des Plaines for the month was $2,503,450.
The tax allotment comes from admissions and wagering.
Rivers’ adjusted gross revenue (the amount taken in after payouts to players) was $44,778,232, dwarfing the $3,101,743 for the Danville casino, which opened in May.
Argosy Casino Alton was the only one with lower totals than Danville’s, with $2,919,572 in adjusted gross revenue and $179,650 distributed to the city.
Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. said city officials figured first-year totals would be about two-thirds of what they hope will be eventually generated.
“We anticipated we’re going to bring in $6 million (a year) from the casino,” Williams said, “but we budgeted that we would only bring in $4 million” the first year.
He said the city figured it would take time for the casino “to get open and work through the kinks.”
Williams said Golden Nugget Danville officials are “happy with the progress so far. The only concern is they need more employees, and that’s a problem.”
“I think everyone throughout the county is having that problem, not just the casino or Danville,” he said.
Williams said with insufficient staff, the casino is not able to operate all of its table games as many hours as it would like to during the day. It has also not yet secured permission from the state to operate its sports book.
Golden Nugget’s adjusted gross revenue from table games was $300,334 — a far cry from the $17,036,708 reported by Rivers. The next-highest total in the state in that category was $2,401,322 at Elgin’s Grand Victoria Casino.
The Danville casino encompasses 19,489 square feet, compared with Rivers’ 78,500. Danville had 32,785 admissions for the month, compared with 264,539 at Rivers.
Danville is also benefiting with direct contributions from ownership. Wilmorite Management, which owns the casino, presented a $1 million check to the city in March for riverfront development.
Williams said he expects Phase 1 of the riverfront design process to be completed by the end of the year. That work will involve construction of an overlook on the bluff behind the David S. Palmer Arena, completion of a boardwalk near the river, and switchback stairs being built on both ends.
At the casino’s grand opening in May, a second $1 million check was presented to the Boys and Girls Club of Danville for construction of a teen center.
Wilmorite will present a third $1 million check later to the city for maintenance of its buildings. Williams said it has not been determined when that presentation will be made.
