BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) – City leaders in Bellevue are encouraged by the results of a recent market analysis outlining the possibilities for expanding the casino industry in Nebraska.
According to the study, Bellevue is ranked as the top potential revenue generator on the expansion list.
There are only six licenses currently granted for casinos and horse racing in Nebraska. Some are in various stages of development, and many are using temporary facilities during construction.
The Nebraska Racing and Gaming commission moved the Hastings license to Ogallala last month, citing a lack of community support in Hastings.
Other cities also want in on the game, too, some even submitting applications nearly two years ago. This market analysis by the Innovation Group could pave the way for those wishes to become reality.
Bellevue is at the top of the list for expansion in the report, which says the city would generate $60 million more than any of the other expansion scenarios.
Even though it would be close to Iowa, and the Warhorse Casino currently being constructed near 63rd and Q Street in Omaha, the study said the the Omaha metro has such a large population base, there’s plenty of revenue to go around for everyone.
Those who are pushing for Bellevue to get a casino license believe the estimates in the report still fall on the conservative side.
‘I was glad the racing commission did the study this year,” said John Hassett with Bellevue Downs Racetrack and Casino. “The legislature gave them until 2025 to do it. I appreciated that they got the study done, because they have to get it done before they can even consider new casino locations.”
Hassett says other studies have put the potential revenue numbers over the $100 million mark for a Bellevue casino and race track.
Bellevue city officials want to tie in other projects to this, if it comes to fruition, including an entertainment district, along with a water park.
They’re hopeful this market analysis shows the way.
“We have kind of a blank canvas on the south side of Bellevue with the new Highway 34 and Kennedy [Freeway],” Bellevue Mayor Rusty Hike said. “There’s literally thousands of acres available for new development.”
Bellevue’s proposal beyond the casino would include quarter-horse racing, which is a shorter track where the horses reach higher speed.
So far, there is no timeline from the commission regarding expansion plans, but this recent study will be discussed at its meeting on Jan. 19, perhaps providing a clearer picture on the next steps.
