KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Drive just less than an hour northwest of Rock Hill, across the state line, and you can play slots at the Catawba Nation’s Two Kings Casino
Make that trip in 2026, and you’ll find a lot more offerings, nation leaders said. 
The Rock Hill area-based Native American tribe broke ground June 7 on its 17-acre property in Kings Mountain for its expanded $700 million casino and resort. The Catawba Two Kings Casino opened in 2021 with a temporary casino offering 1,000 slot machines, electronic gaming tables, a retail sportsbook and a restaurant.

“It has always been the dream of the Catawbas to be self-sufficient, get out of the shadows of others and create generational wealth,” Catawba Nation Chief Brian Harris said. “The development of this casino is a significant milestone for Catawba Nation.” 
Casinos are prohibited in South Carolina, whereas North Carolina has allowed the Cherokee tribe to open two casinos, then the Catawba’s in 2021.

The resort, off Interstate 85, will open in two phases. The first, expected to be complete by 2026, will have a combination of 1,350 slot machines and gaming tables. 
The fully built-out resort will have 4,300 slot machines, 100 table games, more food options and a 400-room hotel, Catawba Nation said. By then, it will employ 2,200 people.

Harris credited state and federal leaders across political aisles who helped move the project forward. Among them, he credited the Trump administration for its role and had invited the former president to the event. In his place, Donald Trump Jr. attended the groundbreaking. He was among more than 500 people on hand. 
The Catawba Indians have lived on their ancestral lands along the banks of the Catawba River for thousands of years. It is South Carolina’s only recognized Native American tribe and has 3,300 members.
People can learn firsthand about the tribe’s history and future at the Catawba Cultural Center in Rock Hill.
