Ben Affleck has admitted that he’s been caught counting cards while at casinos, but he doesn’t see it as a big deal.
In his cover story for the October issue of Details magazine, the “Gone Girl” actor confirmed reports that he had been caught counting cards while playing blackjack.
“That is a true story,” Affleck said. “I took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player. And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack.”
Affleck seems to be referring to an April incident when he was asked to leave the Hard Rock Las Vegas after he was seen counting cards at the casino’s high-rollers table. As a result, he was asked to leave the premises, and reportedly banned for life from playing blackjack at the the casino.
While not illegal, counting cards is not generally tolerated by casinos. (The betting tactic involves adding card values when deciding on placing big wagers.)
The movie star said he doesn’t mind addressing the reports because he wanted to “correct the impression that there’s something wrong with it or that it demonstrates some, like, compulsive activity (on my part).”
“Usually, when you’re a compulsive gambler, the casinos don’t ask you to leave because you’re beating them. You know?
“I will say this. There were a number of casinos that said, ‘Hey, you can’t play blackjack here. We know you count cards. But, you know, you’re welcome to come, do whatever you want, see a show, have dinner. We’ll comp ya. Play roulette, we know you don’t play craps, but hang out, we still want your presence and business.’ “
When asked about the experience of being escorted out of the casino, Affleck said it wasn’t that dramatic.
“I wish I could say they were afraid of me in every capacity, but they only said, ‘No blackjack,’” he said.
Affleck also shot down reports that his wife Jennifer Garner was upset by his gambling and “couldn’t take it anymore,” calling them “bull—-.”
But he allowed that as far as tabloid stories go, it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing that he was portrayed as being good at cards.
“Usually they say, like, ‘He’s homeless!’” Affleck said. “He’s good at blackjack! Well, I’ll take that.”
