Supporters of efforts to positively affect persons experiencing domestic violence or homelessness attended and participated in the Friends of the Family Casino Night, hosted by Families In Crisis, with its event sponsor, Aztec Pet Hospital, recently at the St. Paul Chong Hasang Parish Center in Harker Heights.
The April 27 event raised more than $20,000 to benefit the downtown Killeen shelter and its programs.
Attendees at the April 27 event enjoyed a full casino experience. Professional bartenders provided participants with their favorite drink and Rudy’s Real Pit Barbecue provided the food.
They had an opportunity to purchase silent auction items and buy-it now prizes during the evening. Centex Mirror Photo Booth Company provided photos for participants, and DJ Abner Nite of Party Mixer shared the music.
At the end of the night, attendees had an opportunity to cash in their chips for raffle tickets with a chance at winning one of the 10 Big Prize items.
These included a Hisense 58-inch television, a Blackstone 22 inch griddle, a XBOX S Series, a Faberware Expresso Maker, an Expert 3-Burner Gas Grill with grill tools, a YETI cooler, a Klipsch Speaker, a Coca Cola Corn Hole Cooler, an UltraSonic Nugget Ice Maker, and a Hoover Floormate Deluxe.
Prior to opening the casino for the evening, Homeless Shelter Manager Maria Carmona shared her experience with domestic violence.
As with most individuals who have been or are in domestic violence situations, she went back to her husband a number of times after being promised by him that it would be different and because she wanted to protect their children, even after being stabbed by him.
She received physical abuse, mental abuse, and sexual abuse. Finally she left him. She received assistance through Families In Crisis. Once on her feet, she came back and volunteered for the organization and has been employed by Families In Crisis for more than 28 years.
Board President Larry Moehnke commented “Prior to this year we had a Wine Pairing, but decided to roll the dice and host a casino night this year. It was exciting and I believe the guests really did enjoy the evening. It was definitely a success.”
Moehnke confirmed the event’s success in an email to the Herald on Wednesday.
“After expenses, the total is $26,287.37,” he said. “This is better than we have done in past years with the Wine Pairing. It was a great evening.
Families In Crisis houses, supports, and empowers people experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, and homelessness. In 2023, it provided shelter for an average of 122.1 individuals each night.
To empower and enable individuals and households, they assisted 3,888 individuals from 1,341 households by providing rental assistance for six months or more and monthly follow-up to ensure success in transition.
Of these, more than a third of the households (459) were veterans households with 1,215 individuals.
More than $3.02 million was infused into the community economy through rental assistance and the individuals did business with many merchants in the community which helps support our businesses.
