Police say the man was accused of stealing cars and violating probation.
Albuquerque police officers shot and hurt a man near the Sandia Resort and Casino.
Chief Harold Medina says late Tuesday night, members from the APD Auto Theft Unit tracked down a man, identified as 35-year-old Nicolas Roach, who they had been looking for for two to three weeks.
Medina says that Roach had a felony warrant for violation of probation and parole and was a known auto theft offender.
Medina says officers saw Roach drive through the Sandia Resort and Casino parking lot. Officers then got the vehicle to stop by using a grappler. That’s a device officers fire from a police vehicle and attach it to the tires of the suspects vehicle to get it to stop.
At that point, two women got out of the car and were taken into custody. Medina says Roach then tried to drive away, dragging the police car 20 to 30 feet.
At some point, Medina says officers heard gunshots from the vehicle, and officers returned gunfire, hitting Roach. He was taken to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition, according to police.
No Albuquerque police officers were hurt in this shooting.
