For more than two decades, Soboba Casino in San Jacinto was located in a tent structure crowded with slot machines and table games with a smoky atmosphere, one lounge and not a lot of food options.
But the replacement resort property that opens this week is akin to a high-end Las Vegas luxury resort. There’s a roomy gaming floor, modern decor, spacious hotel rooms, and cornucopia of food and drink options that run the gamut from prime rib to lychee martinis.
The new resort will officially replace the original 1995 casino this week, opening its gaming floor Feb. 20 and its hotel property Feb. 22. And like the resorts in Vegas and elsewhere in Southern California, Soboba Casino Resort is going big, with 200 rooms, multiple restaurants, a pool, conference space, entertainment options, and, of course, a gaming floor.
The hotel rooms — many of them with stellar views —  are available in a variety of sizes from 455-square-foot deluxe rooms to the nearly 1,800-square-foot Presidential Suites that come with their own living room space.

The operation is supported by hundreds of employees working in 100,000 square feet of space underground used for offices, laundry, food preparation, an employee dining room and other back-of-house functions.
And the resort is primed for future growth as well, with the gaming floor configured to accommodate future growth and outdoor spaces earmarked for additional hotel wings.
Though Soboba is now wrapping up its expansion project, several casinos continue to work on theirs. Cahuilla Casino recently got started on its own hotel; Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa has been expanding its gaming floor and revamping its dining options; and San Manuel Casino is undertaking a $550 million, multiphase expansion project of its own.
Soboba Tribal Council Vice Chairman Isaiah Vivanco said he’s excited about what the new resort could mean for big events. He said envisions a scenario where, with so many different spaces, the resort could hold more than one Super Bowl party, for example.
“The beauty of this is, is that it allows us to do so much more,” he said. “We’re not confined to one space for one group.”
Here’s what’s inside the new Soboba Casino Resort:
Restaurants and bars
While the original Soboba had very limited dining options, the new resort has a selection for different tastes and price points, from a four-restaurant food court to several sit-down restaurants and a coffee kiosk.
Fairway Café: The 24-hour cafe has an expansive patio that overlooks to the Soboba Springs Golf Course as well as comfy chairs and exposed brick walls for diners sitting inside, plus a number of TVs. The full-service restaurant will offer classic comfort food options, including a Sunday special of prime rib, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. Open daily.
Noodle Bar: This sit-down establishment, which accepts reservations, features dark wood furnishings and brick walls painted with white and orange koi fish.It will serve a selection of Asian specialities including dim sum, chow mein, fried rice. Drinks include a lychee martini. Open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.
Canyons: The property’s upscale fine dining restaurant, Canyons, will serve a selection of appetizers, seafood, desserts and will have a wine list. It is still under construction and hours for the restaurant have not yet been announced.
Restaurant row: This food court-style collection of eateries, which looks more like a hip food hall with its dark wood and subway tile, offers four options: fried chicken restaurant Chick’n It; pizzeria La Casetta; brew pub Pub & Grill; and Mexican eatery El Comal. Chick’n It and Pub & Grill will be open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. La Casetta and El Comal will serve breakfast from 7-11 a.m. and lunch and dinner from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Koffee Kiicha: It may have the same name as the coffee kiosk at the former casino, but this spot has been given an upgrade in its new digs. Guests who need a caffeinated pick-me-up will find coffee drinks, teas, smoothies and baked goods. Hours are 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily.
Tree Bar: Located in the middle of the casino, this bar has a feature that can be seen from across the gaming floor — a large illuminated tree surrounded by with dangling strings of glass beads. Vivanco said the lights on the tree can be changed to different colors for different occasions. Guests can enjoy the opulent centerpiece as they imbibe on craft cocktails, aged whiskeys and beer. The bar will be open from 6 a.m.-2 a.m. daily.
Sports Cabaret: This space will allow visitors to enjoy a drink while catching musicians and comedians alike with its cocktail bar and ample seating. Before acts come on, guests will be able to catch a sports game on one of the bar’s multiple TVs or massive Sobobatron screens. Hours have not yet been announced.
Poolside Bar & Grill: Guests can access this bar from two different points: One side of the bar faces the hotel lobby while another side faces the outside pool area. The bar offers beer, spirits and food. The outdoor portion facing the pool is under construction.
The pool
The 8,000-square-foot pool is shaded by large palm trees and is flanked by two large grass areas that could be used for pool parties and concerts. The space will have fire pits and portable bar and grills. It will also have food and drink service from the Poolside Bar & Grill.
Conference center
The resort’s 15,000-square-foot conference center can be configured as one large room, two medium-sized ones or four smaller rooms. It has already attracted bookings for weddings and meetings and could also be used as a concert venue.
Gaming floor
While the number of games — 2,000 slots and 32 table games — will remain the same as at the old casino, there will be much more space between the machines. Some of the games will be player favorites from the original property while others will be new.
One of the biggest differences in the new casino has nothing to do with the machines. Vivanco showed off how a space below the gaming floor will pump fresh air from the outside to disperse cigarette smoke.
“There’s 20 to 24 air changes per hour so it promotes fresh air throughout the building,” Vivanco said.
Visitors who want to wager a little more in hopes of winning big can visit the secluded high limit gaming room, located off the regular gaming floor. The room features slots and a handful of table games, including blackjack and baccarat.
The hotel
The former property did not have a hotel. The new resort boasts 200 rooms and the largest of them, the presidential suites, have a luxurious look that includes marble countertops, marble baseboards, a stone accent wall and large windows looking out at the San Jacinto Mountains over the pool area and golf course. (The hotel is so close to the golf course that one of the golf holes was reconfigured to accommodate the building). The suites also have a butler’s pantry, wet bar, activity tables (either foosball or pool), a living room and expansive bathrooms.
The standard rooms, dubbed as deluxe rooms on the Soboba website, have amenities including Keurig machines, 55-inch Samsung casting compatible TVs and mini fridges.
What’s Vivanco’s favorite part? He says its hard to choose.
“I haven’t even taken it all in yet,” he said. “I’m still in awe of the whole thing.”
