VALLEJO — The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has instructed the director of the Pacific Regional Office to review the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians’ fee-to-trust land application for property in Vallejo.
The review could lead to discussions under the National Environmental Policy Act between the tribe and the Pacific Regional Office, a required part of the fee-to-trust decision.
The goal of the tribe, headquartered in Lakeport, is not only to establish its own reservation, but to build a casino.
The Board of Supervisors has sent a letter to Deb Haaland, secretary of the Interior, opposing the project.
“The Solano County Board of Supervisors remains opposed to any proposal by the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians … to build a gaming facility within the city of Vallejo,” the letter signed by board Chairman Mitch Mashburn said.
The letter also calls for a review procedure that allows input from the county. The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, based in Brooks near Woodland, also has expressed its concerns and the need for a more transparent review.
Yocha Dehe claims the area being looked at by the Pomo Indians as its ancestral lands.
“Among other things, the evidentiary record showed the Vallejo site is more than 90 miles from Scotts Valley’s rural Lake County homeland,” a letter signed by Anthony Roberts, chairman of the Yocha Dehe tribal board, states.
“There are no Pomo villages, burial sites or tribal lands located anywhere near Vallejo. Indeed, the southern boundary Pomo linguistic territory is more than 70 miles to the north, with several other tribal groups traditionally located between,” the letter states. “There was – and remains – (no evidence) Scotts Valley or its ancestors ever used or occupied the Vallejo site.”
Yocha Dehe also operated the Cache Creek Casino Resort, which could be adversely impacted by a new casino in Vallejo. It was not immediately clear how much of the Cache Creek business comes from nearby Solano.
There have been no responses to repeated attempts for comments from the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians.
This is at least the fourth attempt by the Pomo Indians, without success, to secure the property in question.

“ancestral lands,” MY BOOTIE. If this keeps up, they’ll end up owning all the land that they once had, claiming all our houses too, then General Custer will have died for nothing :-). Ever drive down I-80, seeing that casino off the freeway in San Pablo??? Now is the city of San Pablo an Indian reservation too??? STOP ALL THIS MADNESS. I’d rather go to Tahoe where you can hear, “Can Harrahs buy you a drink???” LOL
