CHICKASAW, Ala. (WPMI) — According to the Mobile Co. Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office was requested by the Chickasaw Police Department to assist with a death investigation.
MCSO Deputies responded to a hotel located at 370 West Lee Street and found Christopher Ryan Martin (DOB 5/15/1985) inside room 235 with a gunshot wound underneath his chin. A 9 mm shell casing was found under the deceased near his neck.
MCSO Detectives reviewed the surveillance video outside the room where the deceased was found and saw a man arrive at room 235 at approximately 3:40 am, a gunshot was heard at approximately 3:41 and then the male left the hotel in a dark SUV. The male was identified as Cornelius Layette Smith (DOB 1/23/76)
MCSO Detectives and US Marshalls located Cornelius at the Island View Casino in Gulf Port, Mississippi. He was arrested and charged with Murder.
Upon extradition, he will be transported to Mobile County Metro Jail.
