Lynne Mulston is the president of the Reston Citizens Association and campaign coordinator for Citizens Opposed to Reston Casino. The latter group recently added a Take Action Fairfax County tab, in light of Tysons now being seen as the likely location of a casino if Senate Bill 675 is passed and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adds a casino referendum to a future ballot.

RESTON, VA — A bill in the Virginia Senate adds Fairfax County to the list of localities eligible to host a casino in the Commonwealth.
Let’s stop the Casino Bill SB-675 in Committee.
How, you ask? Let’s all take easy action. In three minutes or less, you can ask all the members of the Senate General Laws and Technology Committee to stop the Fairfax County Casino Bill. Even if you don’t live near the proposed casino location, it will negatively impact you and your family. The harms of a casino far outweigh any financial gains.
Residents have not asked for a casino in Fairfax County. The proposal is a well-financed, coordinated effort by one developer to increase profits at the expense of the public.
To oppose this threat, take three minutes to copy the email addresses of the legislators who serve on the Committee into a new email using the prepared letter below, personalizing it as you wish. Consider copying your local district representatives, and don’t forget to add your name and address to the closing at the bottom.

Subject Line: REJECT SB675 Casino gaming in Fairfax County
I strongly oppose the establishment of a casino in Fairfax County. Reject any proposals for a casino in Fairfax County. The introduction of a casino would have detrimental effects on our community’s social fabric, safety, economic stability, and overall quality of life. Fairfax County residents never requested a casino.
The harms of a casino far outweigh any financial gains.
1. National Security Threat: Fairfax County and surrounding areas have a high concentration of personnel employed by the intelligence community. Gambling debt is a key way that other countries could potentially compromise our national security.
2. Loss of real estate values: The introduction of a casino in Fairfax County will likely reduce real estate values nearby, resulting in less property tax revenue and requiring higher property tax rates county-wide. Research from the National Association of Realtors reports that adding casinos to a community generally lowers home values in high-density areas.
3. Traffic Congestion: Fairfax County is already facing catastrophic traffic congestion issues during peak hours. The addition of a casino would only exacerbate this problem by attracting thousands of visitors daily who will contribute further strain on our roads and infrastructure.
4. Crime Impact: A casino can lead to an increase in crime rates, including thefts, frauds, sex-trafficking, drugs, and violent crimes. According to numerous studies conducted in various cities across the United States where casinos were introduced, crime rates have shown a significant rise in close proximity to these establishments.
5. Negative Social Impacts on Vulnerable Communities: Casinos tend to disproportionately affect low-income individuals who are more susceptible to gambling addiction and its associated consequences such as financial ruin and family breakdowns. There is well-documented evidence of the negative effects of gambling on communities of color, youth, and individuals with mental health challenges.
6. Distorted Local Economy: While proponents argue that casinos create jobs for local residents, these jobs are often lower-paying with limited opportunities for advancement compared to other industries like technology or healthcare, which could be better suited for Fairfax County’s workforce.
7. Preservation of Community Values: Fairfax County prides itself on being a family-friendly community with strong values rooted in education and cultural diversity, rather than gambling and chance. A casino would undermine the very essence of our county’s reputation.
8. Social and Economic Stability: Contrary to the promises of those lobbying for a casino, they do not guarantee long-term economic growth or prosperity for local communities. Research has consistently shown that the introduction of casinos often leads to increased bankruptcy rates among local residents and small businesses due to gambling addiction and financial strain.
Please reject any proposals for a casino in Fairfax County. Help us preserve the unique character and well-being of Fairfax County for future generations.
Sincerely,
