Atlantic City casino workers rallied at state Sen. Vince Polistina’s (R-Atlantic) office in Egg Harbor Township on Wednesday morning to call on him to support a now-stalled ban on casino smoking that he once sponsored.
A bill that would close the state’s indoor smoking ban loophole allowing people to smoke on a portion of casino floors failed to come to a vote last session. Representing dealers at three of Atlantic City’s casinos, union representatives said they’re frustrated with lawmakers like Polistina, who originally supported an all-out ban but is now considering introducing a compromise bill that would phase in a ban over several years and include smoking rooms that dealers could opt out of.
Opponents of the initial bill argued the casino industry will lose revenue and jobs to neighboring states where smoking is still allowed.
