A jackpot winner who wished only her first name, Lavina, to be published won $439,972.57 on a slot machine at Chicken Ranch Casino in Jamestown last week, breaking the record of $278,277 set in 2022.

A jackpot winner who wished only her first name, Lavina, to be published won $439,972.57 on a slot machine at Chicken Ranch Casino in Jamestown last week, breaking the record of $278,277 set in 2022.
A lucky Chicken Ranch Casino gamer broke a record Wednesday night when she won a jackpot of nearly $440,000 on a slot machine.
The winner, Lavina, was betting $2.50 on a “Hot Stuff” machine at 10:40 p.m. when she broke the 2022 record, the Jamestown casino said in a news release. The previous record-breaker won $278,722 on March 18 last year.
“Hot Stuff” is a wide area progressive machine, which means it’s linked with others across multiple casino properties, according to the release. The machines’ jackpot increases with every wager across all machines until a player wins the top award. The news release only identified the winner by her first name.
Lavina’s $439,972 jackpot adds to the over $33 million total Chicken Ranch has awarded in jackpots this year.
How much do you take home if you win big at a casino?
Whether a casino takes out taxes before you leave depends on what type of gambling you did, how much you won and the ratio of earnings to the wager, according to previous Bee reporting. Wager refers to how much you put down as a bet.
A Turbo Tax CPA and tax expert, Lisa Greene-Lewis, previously told The Sacramento Bee that the wager is subtracted from the total wins to determine whether taxes need to be deducted. The casino will take 24% before you leave the vicinity if:
— The winnings, after the wager is subtracted, is more than $5,000 for sweepstakes, wagering pools, poker tournaments, lotteries and wagering transactions for races
— The winnings are at least 300 times the amount of the bet
The 24% tax withholding typically does not apply to wins from bingo, slot machines or keno, Lewis said, but you may have to provide the casino with your social security number or ITIN to avoid deductions.
