Bally’s bid to put a casino at Ferry Point appeared to get a boost Monday, as elected officials cheered the casino chain’s promise to launch a free 10-stop bus route in the transit-challenged east Bronx.
The bright-red, 20-seat bus, which is set to run for at least three months starting Oct. 1, is perhaps the sweetest community offer so far in the rush by at least 10 developers to score a coveted downstate casino license allowing operators to offer live table games.
Bally’s detailed the bus route Monday, as it pushes local elected officials to go all-in on its casino plan.
The state-run bidding process has prioritized community input by mandating signoff from panels of local politicians. Neighborhood backlash seems poised to nix numerous casino designs.
But the Bally’s bid, which aims to plant a casino alongside a struggling golf course long operated by the Trump Organization, has a geographic advantage — it is not in a heavily trafficked location — and has met an increasingly friendly response from local elected officials.
This month, Bally’s inked a deal with the Trump Organization to transfer control of the golf course to the casino chain. The Trump name is expected to soon be removed from the links, Bally’s said.
The complex, formerly known as the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, is one of the stops on the bus route.
The bus’ 30-minute loop will also include a stop at the notoriously remote Throgs Neck ferry stop, a vital connection, and at other locations in Westchester Square, Schuylerville and Throgs Neck, according to the casino chain. The Bronx Times previously reported details of the route.
The bus is set to run five days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Bally’s said.
In a news release issued by Bally’s, state Sen. Nathalia Fernandez said in a statement that the bus “lends strong support to local small businesses and benefits all residents.”
Borough President Vanessa Gibson said in a statement that the shuttle “aligns perfectly” with her vision for the area. And Assemblyman Michael Benedetto added in a statement that the bus “could be a catalyst for robust economic growth.”
But none of the three officials have taken a firm position in support of the casino plan. The three Democrats, along with Councilwoman Marjorie Velazquez, are set to have voices on a board that could vote down the bid.
To come to fruition, a city casino bid must be authorized by a majority vote from a panel with representatives of four local officials and the mayor and governor.
Bally’s seemed to notch a preliminary win 10 days ago, when Velazquez issued a statement saying that it was “time that we move forward and transform the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point.”
The Democratic councilwoman has not endorsed the casino concept outright. But in an interview on Monday, she said she looked “very favorably” on the plan, and that she saw the shuttle as a clear signal that Bally’s was attempting to meet neighborhood needs.
“The community had been talking about this for quite some time, and Bally’s stepped up to the plate,” Velazquez said of the bus. “We are a transit desert. Let’s be real.”
Matt Cruz, the district manager for the local community board, said earlier this year that neighbors were skeptical of the bid. He did not immediately reply to messages on Monday.
Benedetto said by phone that he was still seeking community feedback, but that he was “impressed” by Bally’s.
“They’ve been a good neighbor,” he said.
Ferry Point sits below the Whitestone Bridge across from northern Queens.
Under Bally’s plan, the casino would cover 10 acres adjacent to the decade-old golf course, which would continue to operate.
In January, New York State launched the bidding process for three $500 million downstate casino licenses. Two permits are expected to go to existing so-called racinos with horse racing and digital betting in Yonkers and southeast Queens, leaving a small army of developers angling for the final license.
There are at least six blueprints in Midtown Manhattan, one in Queens by Citi Field, one on Long Island aimed at the Nassau Coliseum site and one in Brooklyn’s Coney Island.
The Coney Island bid has met considerable community opposition. The developer has sought to win over locals by funding youth sports programs.
Las Vegas Sands, which is bidding for the Nassau site, has hosted youth sports programming, too, including an event with David Beckham.
