Garden City, L.I.: I am writing regarding the potential Sands Casino to be located in Nassau County. As many know, Hofstra University sits geographically adjacent to the proposed casino. The university basically stands alone as an entity with the financial means to not take “community benefit” (payoffs) from the Sands because, presumably, the potential disruption caused by the casino would far outweigh whatever funds the school may have been offered to turn a blind eye.
Bruce Blakeman (Frank Franklin II/AP)
I encourage the Daily News and its readers to closely follow Hofstra’s lawsuit against Nassau County, which will begin to play out in the coming weeks. The lawsuit documents flagrant violations of process that the administration of County Executive Bruce Blakeman has undertaken to advantage the Sands in seeking to obtain a lease on the property.
The lawsuit’s allegations read like an episode of “The Sopranos.” For example, the county was required to provide public notice regarding open proceedings to gather community input regarding the casino and its impact on the community. The lawsuit alleges that the county repeatedly posted notice of such proceedings on short notice and listing the wrong year on the calendar (2022 instead of 2023) and without mention of “casino”, “hub” or “Sands” in the agenda. And there is so much more.
Whether readers are inclined to support the casino or not, all should be aware of what may be happening under our noses. It sure doesn’t smell good! Mike McKeever
Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.: In light of the recent shootings in Baltimore and Philadelphia, I guess the Black Lives Matter movement hasn’t taken root in these cities yet. Peter McKenna
Brooklyn: Thank you, Voicer Phil Antico, for expressing your thoughts about electric bicycles in NYC. Are sidewalks for pedestrians or the bicycles? It does not seem clear since bicyclists use both (and I am not referring to children on bikes). Councilwoman Vickie Paladino expressed the idea of putting restrictions on bicycles but was reproached. Thank you, councilwoman, for at least trying. Since bicycles themselves seem to be beyond the City Council to restrict, how about requiring licenses for motorized bicycles and e-bicycles? These vehicles can go the speed limit on city streets and ride into toll tunnels and over bridges, yet have absolutely no restrictions. They pass red lights and ignore traffic rules. Someone walking the streets of Manhattan or Brooklyn must be on the alert every second, not only crossing the street, but also walking on the sidewalk. You never know when one of these machines will come behind you or toward you. Esther Berkowitz
Brooklyn: Climate change is certainly making wildfires, along with vastly more powerful storms and floods, into the “new abnormal” (“Smoke creeps back,” July 1). Look for disruptions in food supply as crops fail, and global political disruption as rising waters cause mass flight from coastal areas. We are seeing some U.S. climate leadership, like President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act to shift us from dirty power to clean. Yet, Republican leaders keep trying to stop climate progress by blocking renewable power projects with ridiculous legislation that encourages more of the fossil fuel burning that is endangering their voters. Here in New York, Gov. Hochul has ample opportunity to lead the most ambitious clean energy priorities, like selecting enough new offshore wind leases. She must give Public Service Commissioner Rory Christian all the support he needs to keep shutting down the dirtiest gas plants, and she must follow through on the promised state-wide gas transition, speeding upstate solar and wind farms. Ella Ryan
Milford, Conn.: To all you students who took out loans and don’t want to repay them, check this out: The definition of a loan is: You get money and promise to pay it back. Did ya miss that class that day, sleeping in after a night of drinking at a frat party? You want me to help pay back your loans? How dare you. Get a couple of jobs and pay the loans back like the people before you did. Peter Sulzicki
Forest Hills: Please stop calling the six Supreme Court justices “conservative.” By all conservative principles, they are not. What they are are reactionaries, radicals, rogue and, if you read Justice Elena Kagan’s minority opinion, ”the court exercises authority it does not have. It violates the Constitution.” Framing it as what it actually is clarifies the truth. All of your readers deserve the clarity. Stew Frimer
Manhattan: While affirmative action has ended, it has not affected American Descendants of Slavery, as many believe. There is a special consideration for individual applicants to discuss their race, history, lineage and any special circumstances they faced and overcame in our country. Surely, this applies to American Descendants of Slavery specifically and will afford them special consideration for entry to any Ivy League school they wish to attend. Affirmative action was never intended for immigrants or POC. It was intended to help uplift ADOS who have faced racial discrimination in our country for centuries. This is the part that some people either forget, ignore or are unaware of. Hopefully, this will increase the number of American Descendants of Slavery students enrolled in Ivy League schools and institutions of higher learning. Heyward Johnson
Massapequa, L.I.: I am a 61-year-old born-and-bred New Yorker. Growing up in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, when people disagreed, they had a difference of opinion. Somewhere along the line over the past three years, liberals turned a difference of opinion into disinformation and began silencing people on social media. When you only allow people to hear what the government wants them to, you no longer have a democracy. The world is watching as the current administration disassembles this once great beacon of democracy known as the United States of America. Tom Ascher
Port Saint Lucie, Fla.: Dear President Biden, the interactions with both China and Russia display weakness. Your inability to control our nation’s borders is wreaking havoc on our cities. Citizens fear walking the streets or riding the subway. Our education system is failing its students. Our military‚ which can not reach its quotas, is forced to lower its physical requirements. Trying to arrange airline travel is a crapshoot. Food prices are sky-high. For these reasons, I will not vote for your reelection. On another note, I can forgive your physical awkwardness and tongue twists, but your continued denial of your granddaughter makes you look mean and petty. Edward C. Burke
Brooklyn: The carriage horse trade in NYC is disgraceful. It should have been banned decades ago. These horses work nine hours a day, seven days a week with no rest or turnout. They suffer miserably in the freezing cold and stifling heat, with injured hooves and inadequate access to water. At the end of the day, they are forced to negotiate chaotic, unyielding NYC traffic while they trek to their hot, tiny, filthy stalls. When they are no longer useful to the industry, they are often sold at auction, their “retirement” a brutal, excruciating death in a slaughterhouse. Last week, when the heat index was deemed inappropriate for horses to be on the street, they were filmed being forced to work in direct violation of the minimal laws set up to protect them. As a registered nurse of 43 years and someone who has worked to alleviate suffering, I can not bear to see these poor horses tormented. Rina Deych
Queens Village: People squawking about carriage-horse rides that cost more than $100 for a less than a one-hour ride! Forget about who lives or comes from where in and around the country. People from NYC know better — $100 could be better spent on a theater ticket, restaurant or both. That’s what attracts tourists, not horses! How many of you people from NYC complaining about the removal of carriage horses have actually spent your hard earned money on one of these rides? I think not! Put your money where your mouth is, New Yorkers! Joan Silaco
