Two birdbrained California law students are accused of killing and decapitating an exotic bird at a Las Vegas casino, with surveillance footage allegedly showing the pair finding humor in the barbaric beheading.
Eric Cuellar and Justin Teixeira, both 24, were jailed on charges of suspicion of conspiracy and willful malicious killing of wildlife — a felony under Nevada’s stricter animal rights laws.
Police said the two men were seen Friday laughing and throwing around the body of a dead, 14-year-old, helmeted guineafowl at the Flamingo hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The large bird was part of a garden area at its Wildlife Habitat.
Authorities said surveillance video shows the men chasing the bird into some trees. Witnesses said the two emerged carrying the body and severed head of the bird.

Helmeted guineafowl are known for their large round bodies and tiny heads with patches of red and blue.
Police were called to the scene around 9:35 a.m. Officials said the suspects claimed to study at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, and had student identification cards.
It wasn’t clear if they have attorneys.
The Wildlife Habitat, meanwhile, is also home to swans, ducks and turtles. The animals are “tended by experts and live on islands and streams surrounded by sparkling waterfalls and lush foliage,” according to the Flamingo’s website.
